    Monte Carlo simulations of the classical two-dimensional discrete frustrated ϕ4\phi ^4 model

    The classical two-dimensional discrete frustrated ϕ4\phi ^4 model is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The correlation function is obtained for two values of a parameter dd that determines the frustration in the model. The ground state is a ferro-phase for d=−0.35d=-0.35 and a commensurate phase with period N=6 for d=−0.45d=-0.45. Mean field predicts that at higher temperature the system enters a para-phase via an incommensurate state, in both cases. Monte Carlo data for d=−0.45d=-0.45 show two phase transitions with a floating-incommensurate phase between them. The phase transition at higher temperature is of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Analysis of the data for d=−0.35d=-0.35 shows only a single phase transition between the floating-fluid phase and the ferro-phase within the numerical error.Comment: 5 figures, submitted to the European Physical Journal

    A DAQ System for Linear Collider TPC Prototypes based on the ALEPH TPC Electronics

    Within the international studies of a high energy linear electron positron collider, several groups are developing and testing prototypes for a Linear Collider TPC. This detector is planned to be used as a central part in the tracking system of a detector at such a machine. In this note we describe a DAQ system, which has been developed for the use in tests of TPC prototypes. It is based on electronics used at the ALEPH experiment at CERN.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Dutch listeners' use of suprasegmental cues to English stress

    Dutch listeners outperform native listeners in identifying syllable stress in English. This is because lexical stress is more useful in recognition of spoken words of Dutch than of English, so that Dutch listeners pay greater attention to stress in general. We examined Dutch listeners’ use of the acoustic correlates of English stress. Primary- and secondary-stressed syllables differ significantly on acoustic measures, and some differences, in F0 especially, correlate with data of earlier listening experiments. The correlations found in the Dutch responses were not paralleled in data from native listeners. Thus the acoustic cues which distinguish English primary versus secondary stress are better exploited by Dutch than by native listeners

    Successful paediatric HIV treatment in rural primary care in Africa

    <p>Objective: Clinical outcomes of HIV-infected children on antiretroviral treatment (ART) in a decentralised, nurse/counsellor-led programme.</p> <p>Design: Clinical cohort.</p> <p>Setting: KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.</p> <p>Patients: HIV-infected children aged <= 15 years on ART, June 2004-2008.</p> <p>Main outcome measures: Survival according to baseline characteristics including age, WHO clinical stage, haemoglobin and CD4%, was assessed in Kaplan-Meier analyses. Hazard ratios for mortality were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression and changes in laboratory parameters and weight-for-age z scores after 6-12 months' treatment were calculated.</p> <p>Results: 477 HIV-infected children began ART at a median age of 74 months (range 4-180), median CD4 count (CD4%) of 433 cells/mm(3) (17%) and median HIV viral load of log 4.2 copies/ml; 105 (22%) were on treatment for tuberculosis and 317 (76.6%) were WHO stage 3/4. There were significant increases after ART initiation in CD4% (17% vs 22%; p<0.001), haemoglobin (9.9 vs 11.7 g/l; p <= 0.001) and albumin (30 vs 36 g/l; p <= 0.001). 32 (6.7%) children died over 732 child-years of follow-up (43.7 deaths/1000 child-years; 95% CI 32.7 to 58.2), 17 (53.1%) within 90 days of treatment initiation; median age of death was 84 (IQR 10-181) months. Children with baseline haemoglobin <= 8 g/l were more likely to die (adjusted HR 4.5; 95% CI 1.6 to 12.3), as were those aged <18 months compared with >60 months (adjusted HR 3.2; 95% CI 1.2 to 9.1).</p> <p>Conclusions Good clinical outcomes in HIV-infected children on ART are possible in a rural, decentralised service. Few young children are on ART, highlighting the urgent need to identify HIV-exposed infants.</p&gt

    Field theory of directed percolation with long-range spreading

    It is well established that the phase transition between survival and extinction in spreading models with short-range interactions is generically associated with the directed percolation (DP) universality class. In many realistic spreading processes, however, interactions are long ranged and well described by L\'{e}vy-flights, i.e., by a probability distribution that decays in dd dimensions with distance rr as r−d−σr^{-d-\sigma}. We employ the powerful methods of renormalized field theory to study DP with such long range, L\'{e}vy-flight spreading in some depth. Our results unambiguously corroborate earlier findings that there are four renormalization group fixed points corresponding to, respectively, short-range Gaussian, L\'{e}vy Gaussian, short-range DP and L\'{e}vy DP, and that there are four lines in the (σ,d)(\sigma, d) plane which separate the stability regions of these fixed points. When the stability line between short-range DP and L\'{e}vy DP is crossed, all critical exponents change continuously. We calculate the exponents describing L\'{e}vy DP to second order in Ï”\epsilon-expansion, and we compare our analytical results to the results of existing numerical simulations. Furthermore, we calculate the leading logarithmic corrections for several dynamical observables.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    Preventing Plagiarism and Fostering Academic Integrity: A Practical Approach

    Although plagiarism, cheating and academic integrity receive increased attention, literature provides little practical advice or strategies on how to approach these topics with students. In this paper we describe a case study in relation to an intervention we have developed to help our students prevent plagiarism and to foster academic integrity amongst our studentship. In the two hour workshop students are supported in gaining a deeper understanding of what plagiarism is and provides them with practical examples of how plagiarism can be avoided. In the context of the workshop plagiarism is discussed in its many forms of the intentional and unintentional stealing or appropriating of ideas that are not credited accordingly (Helgesson & Eriksson, 2015). The intervention also encompasses discussions around academic integrity and what academic integrity means in theory and in practice. The six steps in our intervention are a sorting activity (what is plagiarism?), the presentation of real cases (what is the impact of plagiarism?), practising to synthesise ideas (how can I prevent plagiarism), the role of plagiarism-detection software such as Turnitin (how can I check for plagiarism?), the formulation of an integrity code and a summary of the content covered in the session (what do I know now?). The intervention draws upon research and practical experiences and is designed in such a way that with adaptations it can be delivered to all levels of students and courses. Following the presentation of the individual elements of the workshop the article concludes with a brief outline of a research project in relation to our workshop, which will be used to inform our further development of the intervention but also to provide a more formal evaluation of its effectiveness

    Multichannel heart scanner based on high-Tc SQUIDs

    A 7-channel magnetometer for magnetocardiography based on high-T c SQUIDs has been realized. This magnetometer is used for test experiments in the development of a multichannel high-Tc SQUID based heart-scanner for clinical applications. The intrinsic noise level of the channels in the 7-channel system is typically 120 fT/Âż(Hz) down to 1 Hz. Magnetocardiograms were recorded inside a magnetically shielded room. Introductory experiments were performed on the suppression of noise by combining magnetometers to form planar gradiometers. The noise suppression that can be established appeared to be limited by the imbalance of the gradiometric configuration, which is roughly 2%. This relatively poor balance of the system is caused by inaccuracies in the transfer functions of the individual SQUID magnetometers, and by deviations from the planar geometr
